Game Viewing in Limpopo

Game Viewing in Limpopo is a “Must Do”

Game viewing in Limpopo can be undertaken by a number of means, although vehicle game drives are certainly the most popular and probably the safest. Nevertheless, there are options and visitors' safety is always treated as paramount, whatever the mode of transport employed.

Game Drive Options

game drive limpopoGuided walks are offered. Guides have the experience and knowledge of animal behaviour to conduct game viewing walks in safety. They will usually be armed with a rifle, just in case of the unexpected.

A walking game viewing experience in Limpopo has its advantages. Walkers are just so much closer to nature, and can inspect different animals' spoor, small indigenous plants and insects, which are unlikely to be seen from a vehicle.

Some game reserves have the option of game viewing on horseback. Here, one is still fairly close to the ground, and the horse does all the walking. Be aware that muscles not normally used every day, may be somewhat stiff for a day or two, unless you ride horses regularly.

Elephant back game viewing is another unique experience. Although this is not commonly available, it is on offer at certain venues.

The premise is that visitors can get closer to game because the animals are accustomed to elephants roaming in their midst. Because elephants are so large, they are not normally challenged or attacked by predators, and are considered a relatively safe mode of transport for game drives.

Within the Kruger Park, visitors undertake their own game drives in their own vehicles. Roads are good enough not to require 4 x 4 vehicles, so a normal sedan is fine for game viewing in this region. Visitors must ensure that they arrive within their camp confines before gates close for the night. This is a safety and security measure.

4 x 4 Animal Viewing

Game viewing in Limpopo, comfortably seated in an open 4 x 4 vehicle with a driver, accompanied by a qualified game ranger, presents the ultimate game viewing experience. Game drives usually take place early in the morning, before it becomes uncomfortably hot, and in the evening, when nocturnal animals begin to emerge.

Besides having the ranger's experienced eye spotting game, which you otherwise may have missed, you will be informed about animal behaviour, and entertained by stories of actual game drive experiences and adventures.
4 x 4 vehicles do not only have to stay on the most travelled tracks, but may safely negotiate lesser trails, for better observation opportunities.

Game viewing in Limpopo is excellent, and the wild and unspoiled bush country casts its own special spell over nature lovers. This richly biodiverse region is not only home to the Big 5, but also forms the habitat of smaller wild animals, indigenous insects and in excess of 300 different bird species.

Less common South Africa birds which inhabit this region are the Elephant Shrew and the Buffalo Weaver.
The Leopard Tortoise, so named because of the pattern on its shell, is to be found here.

A sundowner game drive is another special experience. What could be more enjoyable than sipping a favourite drink, hearing the night sounds beginning to emerge from the bush, and watching the stars come out in the vastly magnificent African sky?

Photography forms an integral part of game viewing in Limpopo. Most visitors want a record of their bush adventure, so that they might relive this intimate experience of nature and the wild at a later stage. Wildlife photography is an art form, but happy snappers have just as much fun.

Whatever your passion and main field of interest in nature, game viewing in Limpopo is a lifetime experience, not to be missed.
