Game Lodges in South Africa
Think Africa – Think Game Lodges in South Africa
Game lodges in South Africa occur in virtually all provinces of South Africa. It is such a vast country with many climatic regions, each with its own indigenous fauna and flora. Although game no longer appears in the same numbers as before extensive human habitation, there is still wild country in all provinces.
Consequently, game lodges and resorts have been established right across the country, each region offering its own naturally occurring animal species, and fauna and flora, fascinating in its variety. This results in a cross section of wildlife experiences, each with its own charm and magic.
Game Lodges and Resorts
With all of South Africa's natural beauty and diversity, game and nature reserves and resorts are situated in equally diverse landscapes. From viewing the Big 5 in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Northwest, to game drives in the dry, seemingly arid Karoo. Below we’ll discuss each province and what they can offer you.
Limpopo Province
The world renowned Kruger Park, a multitude of private game reserves and lodges are found here. Outstanding game lodges and resorts of all types, for different budgets, are on offer.
KwaZulu-Natal
Resorts and lodges are found throughout KZN, particularly in and around the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, and the inland Drakensberg mountain range and national park.
Free State
There are numerous game parks and lodges and resorts in this province. One of the most popular destinations is the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, perhaps rather because of its scenery than game related activities.
Northern Cape
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offers accommodation ranging from the very basic, to tented camps and luxury lodges. Game consists of species adapted to arid conditions, and the Oryx and black-maned Kalahari lions are major attractions. The Richtersveld Park is said to influence visitors to want to return again and again.
Eastern Cape
Game lodges and numerous other resort facilities are found in the malaria free region. The Big 5 occur in the Addo Elephant, and smaller game is found in the Mountain Zebra Park.
Northwest Province
The Pilanesberg National Park contains various game lodges and other resort accommodation is available around the Park, in fairly close proximity. The Big 5 are resident here.
Western Cape
The reserves in this area consist of nature reserves and resorts, rather than game parks or lodges. However, many activities are the attraction. The famous Cape wine route, Table Mountain, naturally occurring seasonal wild flower displays, the southernmost tip of the continent and whale watching are just a few unique experiences.
Mpumalanga
Because of its natural beauty and proximity to the Kruger Park on the north eastern side, game farms, private reserves and resorts are aplenty.
Gauteng
By far, most of Gauteng is inhabited, urbanised and semi-urbanised. It does not house game parks or reserve resorts. However, lodges are to be found, offering up-market accommodation, detailed and finished in similar style to game lodges.
Because the country is so vast, and offers such diverse experiences, one would be well advised to do some research and decide what general region to visit, depending on the personal experience you desire.
Do you want to spend time in a resort which offers marine life, mountain views or just unspoiled nature, with peaceful tranquillity? Does a true bush experience, with big game viewing take your fancy?
